Social media for students at Sheffield
Dear beautiful flock of lovely new students, if you want to know what’s going on at The University of Sheffield but don’t know where to start, this article is for you.
First things first: The Student’s Union.
Follow Sheffield Student’s Union Facebook account for regular updates on events, activities and news from students all around our campus. It gives you a good sense of what’s happening, and which activities you can take part in. Also, if you missed one, you can go and have a peek of their lovely pictures! 😉
On twitter (@SheffieldSU), it’s more succinct updates, on-the-go tweets that mostly link back to the SU’s webpage.
Want to have a better idea of who your officers are? YouTube SU account. There are a good many well made videos to watch on this channel, but admittedly, they are a little old. Hopefully new ones will come soon—documenting your involvement!
Follow their very active Instagram account (@sheffieldsu) for fun pictures of activities, deals and faces all around the SU.
However, if you’re unsure about something you’re going through or need help dealing with a problem, SSiD is here to help. Whether it’s for general support, questions you may have, documents that need to be issued from the Uni, your Ucard, any sort of information booklet you may need, exams, online services, administration and even for visitors.
It can be worth a look at their Facebook page. Like the SU, they post a lot of things relating to activities on campus, and they also advertise job opportunities sometimes, so keep an eye out if you’re looking for a top-up job!
Also, be aware that the SSiD has an active YouTube channel. This channel has a lot of helpful videos for students who are seeking for advice or want to understand a little better how it works at the University of Sheffield. It’s a great way to get familiar with this new environment, that can seem overwhelming if you’re new to Sheffield, let alone the UK (as I was last year!).
Their Twitter account at @SSiDSheffield lets you know about all the main events happening for students. It’s a lot like the SU’s Twitter feed, except it’s much more focussed on gathering helpful links, such as Student Job Fair, how to avoid Fraud, when to change your Modules, get help for settling at Uni, etc.
Also, if you want to know a little more about Sheffield in Visual terms, you can always follow their Pinterest boards to get inspired… 🙂
And they also have a nice and lively Instagram (@ssidsheffield) account! I’d say it’s a bit of a mix between the SU’s account and Uni of Sheffield’s account, which posts a lot (and I mean *a lot*) of pictures from all around the campus.
Last but not least: be aware that there are tons of other accounts and channels for MANY activities for student around campus— Like Careers Services, the Jobshop, Sheffield Volunteering, Sheffield RAG, Give it a Go etc, etc.
Two that I personally love to follow are the Uni of Sheffield concerts feed and our Box Office (@SUBoxOffice) because it lets us know about all the cultural events that are going on and for which you can just purchase a ticket and voilà.
Hopefully this article has helped clearing up some ideas and gave you ideas as to who to follow online, and where to go next. 🙂 Have fun and enjoy Sheffield life!
