Do you have a passion that’s so far been unrecognised by the Students’ Union? Why not create your own society – not only is it a great experience for any future career (and is included on your HEAR), it also allows you to do something you enjoy at uni outside of studying. Or maybe it’s one of your New Year’s Resolutions to try something new.
My flatmates created the Ice Skating Society since they were keen to skate more and buy their own skates. We all skated together as a big group in Fresher’s Week and there was interest from people in our block.
I’ve been figure skating since I was thirteen, but my lessons were cut short when my home rink closed. Since then I’ve been off-ice skating (figure boots with roller wheels which still allow you to spin and jump), but it’s not the same as ice skating. Sheffield’s rink, with its two Olympic-size ice pads, played a big part in my decision to study here. But I was surprised to find out that the University of Sheffield didn’t actually have an ice skating society, apart from its ice hockey team.
The society founders asked me to join the committee as Publicity Officer, involving managing the society’s social media accounts. I make posts on Facebook and Twitter to publicise skating sessions, and will use it to post details of socials we’ll be holding for our members soon. This committee position is great for anyone interested in a career in public relations, for example.
Other roles in the society’s committee include Treasurer (a good experience for anyone wishing to pursue a business career, or any position involving money), and Social Secretary (involving organising social events), and more. Getting involved in founding a society can give anyone skills in teamwork and experience of entrepreneurial spirit.
If you’ve already found your perfect society, why not try ours too? The Ice Skating Society are holding a Give it a Go session on Saturday 11th February 7-10pm. This will be a great chance to see what we do – no matter if you’ve been ice skating before and want to go again, or if you’ve never set a blade on the ice before.
If you’re keen to get started before then, our first regular session will take place this Saturday 21st January 8-10pm. This will be followed by our regular weekly sessions every Saturday 8-10pm. The committee will always be at the Information Commons tram stop at 7:15pm to meet you and travel on the tram to the ice rink at the Don Valley Arena stop.
Come and see us at the Refreshers Festival on Wednesday 8th February!
